Leadership Series I eight-week course by DCSI: October-November 2026

Agenda

Comprehensive training course focused on topics relating to personal development and team leadership training for new managers, supervisors, and team leads. These classes allow for engagement in a convenient and practical timeframe, with each session building on the last. Participants will be assigned interactive “homework” to practice the skills learned each class.

 

Your Role as a Leader

  • Introduction to Leadership
    • Course begins with a leadership self-assessment & personal action plan
    • Facilitation of activities to explore “leader manager” traits
    • Avoid “Common Supervisor Pitfalls” group discussion
  • Successful Promotion from “Peer to Leader”
    • “What Would My Staff Say” exercise
    • Group Case Study: “Keys to Success”
    • Leadership accountability and “Start – Stop – Continue” model
  • Team Dynamics
    • Key components of an effective team
    • Four stages of team development, including “My Team Assessment”
    • The leader’s role in team empowerment and accountability

 

Effective Communication & Conflict Resolution

  • Identify and communicate with different styles
    • Introduction to “forms of communication” and starting activity
    • Self-evaluation assessment of personal communication style
    • Facilitated lesson exploring the four styles, with techniques for engaging with each style
    • Style Exercise: “Trouble Spots”
  • Develop effective listening skills
    • Utilize 5 techniques for effective listening
    • Activity to overcome “listening roadblocks”
  • Navigate conflict resolution and mediation situations
    • Understand the relationship between communication style and conflict
    • Discuss five strategies for approaching conflict
    • Engage in team “conflict resolution” role play

 

Supervising & The Law

  • Become familiar with key laws impacting the employment relationship, and understand “red flags” that signify the need for HR escalation
    • Begin with discussing how today’s news headlines relate to the workplace
    • Title VII of the Civil Rights Act (My role in preventing discrimination; how to document)
    • Age Discrimination in Employment Act
    • Equal Pay Act
    • Fair Labor Standards Act (Exempt v Non-Exempt, time worked, overtime, minimum wage, breaks, travel & training)
    • Americans with Disabilities Act, As Amended (Types, protections and accommodations)
    • Family & Medical Leave Act (including intermittent leaves)
  • Explore the supervisor’s role in preventing workplace discrimination
    • Facilitate a legally compliant employment interview
    • Prevent sexual harassment in the workplace, addressing common scenarios

 

Performance Management

  • Understand the importance of setting clear expectations for behavior and
    • Evaluate your current “Performance Management” strengths and opportunities
    • Learn how to translate expectations into essential job performance criteria
    • Review the “4 Steps of Performance Management”
  • Monitor performance, provide essential performance feedback and learn to “coach for success”.
    • Utilize tools to track and monitor performance
    • Engage effectively in 1-on-1 meetings
    • Create a positive environment for performance evaluations and avoid common mistakes
  • Address discipline and performance management issues with
    • Present performance improvement needs in a constructive manner
    • Implement techniques to address defensiveness

Sessions will be held on Thursdays, October 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, November 5, 12, & 19, 2026 from 8:30AM – 10:00AM ET (12-Hour Series)
